Football

William "Buck" Rogers performs a tackle on Maj. Duke Danton before Earth Defense Directorate cadets (BR25: "Planet of the Slave Girls").

We use the strategy of a popular sport called football [cadets begin laughing in disbelief] to explain combat strategy.
A very amusing term, Rogers. Does that mean we actually have to put a ball on our foot? [cadets laugh]

 — William "Buck" Rogers and Maj. Duke Danton in a lecture to Earth Defense Directorate fighter pilot cadets, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century's "Planet of the Slave Girls"

Football is the name of two different ancient Earth sports that did not survive into the 25th century: American football (a.k.a. "gridiron") and Association football (a.k.a. "soccer").

William "Buck" Rogers endeavors to explain various American football terms to fellow pilots of the Earth Defense Directorate, much to the consternation of both Col. Wilma Deering during the faux pirate attack on Draconia (BR25: Film, "Awakening") and, later, Maj. Duke Danton to his cadets (BR25: "Planet of the Slave Girls").

Rogers and Danton physically demonstrate both tackling and clipping from American football during a lecture, inflicting considerable damage to the lecture hall's displays and eliciting unexpected amusement for the cadets (BR25: "Planet of the Slave Girls").
